Daily Five/ I- Time (Intervention Time)
Daily Five / I-Time is a structure that is used during the literacy block time and includes the following opportunities: Read to Self, Success Maker, Word Work, Listen to Reading, and Teacher Table. These research based tasks are ones that will have the biggest impact on student reading achievement, as well as help foster children who love to read. It allows students to gain independence and daily practice in the areas of reading and word study.
The Daily Five/ I-Time structure may look different within each classroom. In my classroom, students first receive explicit whole group instruction and then are given independent practice time to read independently. This usually occurs during the last 15-20 minutes of class time. Throughout the week, students will rotate through the five opportunities so that they have time at each task. Below is a detailed description of each task.
Buddy Read: Research has shown that students do not learn as much my independently reading/silent reading. During this time, students read their self-selected good fit books to their friend. Then after students finish reading a book, they will have the opportunity to take an AR test of the material just read. This process allows students to learn and grow from one another and to receive feedback/corrections as needed during the reading process.
I-Ready: Students work independently on the Reading Success Maker computer program that targets students’ individual Reading abilities to enhance their Reading skills.
Word Work: During this time, students use materials to work on word study (phonics, spelling and vocabulary development). The purpose is to increase student’s word knowledge.
Listen to Reading: Students use various media to listen to texts at this time. The purpose is to expose students to fluent reading and new vocabulary.
Teacher Table: During this time, I meet with small groups of students (6) to provide intense small group lessons that focus on specific Reading strategies.
Paper Tray Play: During this time, students can choose from a variety of word sort activities where they cut the words out and glue them into the appropriate column so they are sorted correctly.
Purple Baskets: While assigned to this station, the students work on Word Work prescribed by the Reading Street Reading curriculum using our weekly spelling words.
Puzzle Shelf: While assigned to this station, the students will work on puzzle type activities that focus on reading skills that we are currently learning.
