Students must pass the Ohio State Reading Assessment to pass to 4th grade, and they will be given four chances to take the test. The first time they will take this test (Reading AIR) will be in the Fall. Students must earn a score of 683 or 46 on the Reading AIR to pass on to 4th grade. They will take this same test again in the Spring, so if they don’t pass in the Fall, they will have a second chance.
Students are also given two chances to take and pass an alternative assessment called the Reading MAP. If they earn a score of 194 or higher on the Reading MAP, they will pass on to 4th grade regardless of their Reading AIR score. The Reading MAP test will be given in the Fall and again in the Spring.
Failure to pass at least one of the four testing opportunities will result in mandatory summer school where the students will have two additional chances to take and pass the test. Failure to pass one of the summer school testing sessions will result in a retention in 3rd grade.
